Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive U.F.A. Enters Its Next Chapter: Frost-covered Dawn

Grand Seiko reveals the next evolution of Spring Drive U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) with the new SLGB005 “Frost-covered Dawn.” Building on the landmark SLGB003 released earlier this year, this timepiece introduces a more compact 37 mm case in Ever-Brilliant Steel and a dial inspired by the serene violet glow of daybreak over Shinshu’s frost-covered forests.

The SLGB005 carries the Caliber 9RB2, part of Grand Seiko’s next-generation Spring Drive U.F.A. series. With an annual precision of ±20 seconds, it remains one of the most accurate mainspring-powered movements ever created.

While the first U.F.A. model emphasized technical innovation, this new creation refines the experience — expressing the technology through artistry and form. The result is a watch that feels more intimate in scale yet no less extraordinary in detail.

Crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel, the case and bracelet bring a luminous tone and corrosion resistance surpassing that of traditional stainless steel. This metal enhances Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing, producing mirror-like surfaces that shift gracefully between reflection and shadow.

Designed under the Evolution 9 Style, the 37 mm case has a low center of gravity for optimal comfort and stability. The bracelet’s proportions—wide, balanced, and substantial—add to the watch’s poised yet understated presence.

In Shinshu, winter mornings begin with stillness. Frost coats the trees, and the first light of dawn reveals a soft violet shimmer across the landscape. The dial of the SLGB005 captures this fleeting beauty, its textured surface and gradient color evoking the moment when night yields to day.

Through the sapphire case back, the softly frosted finish of the movement echoes this natural motif—a quiet reminder of the inspiration that shapes every Grand Seiko creation.
